Capital of Chile, cosmopolitan Santiago is the most important cultural and artistic centre of the country. Here visitors find a wide range of entertainment, including theatre, opera, museums, and a wide variety of restaurants catering for every palate, dance clubs and folk shows. The city covers a wide area, broken by the hills of San Cristobal and Santa Lucía, which offer great views on a clear day. Museums include the Pre-Columbian Art Museum which houses one of the best collections of textiles in South America and La Chascona, former house of poet Pablo Neruda, now a museum which honours his life. It is also a city which houses modern constructions contrasting with the historic buildings in the old centre. Here main highlights include the San Francisco Church (built between 1572 and 1628), the Municipal Theatre, La Casa Colorada, the Moneda Palace (current seat of Government) and the Central Post Office alongside the historic Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas, or central square. From Santiago it is easy to visit ski resorts such as Valle Nevado or Portillo and wineries such as Concha y Toro, Cousiño Macul and Santa Rita as well as spend the day on the central coast or rural villages nearby
DAY 3 - VINA DE MAR / VALPARAISO
Viña del Mar is an hour and a half’s drive away from Santiago on the Pacific Coast. The climate and its beaches are attractive all year round and it has many sights to visit such as the Quinta Vergara, a former hacienda and fine arts museum and the gaming Casino. With restaurants, shops and a lively nightlife it is only 10 minutes drive from the city of Valparaíso, making it the ideal complement to the historic attractions there.
